“In addition, my brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord. To write to you again about this is no trouble for me and is a safeguard for you. Watch out for the dogs, watch out for the evil workers, watch out for those who mutilate the flesh. For we are the circumcision, the ones who worship by the Spirit of God, boast in Christ Jesus, and do not put confidence in the flesh— although I have reasons for confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he has grounds for confidence in the flesh, I have more:”
Philippians 3:1-4 CSB

It’s always fun to realize my house has gotten eerily quiet, only to remember the boys are inside not outside. As I make my way to where they were last playing I often hear, “Here she comes!” The element of surprise is definitely something my children are still learning but have not mastered. As a parent, I am very grateful for this. Paul, much like my boys, was trying to warn his brothers and sisters of those who were coming against them. He lists three groups of whom the Philippians needed to beware.

The first group of people Paul refers to as dogs. We have a hundred pound Golden Retriever that is so lovable and kind that it is hard for me to think of this group in the manner that Paul is actually referring to them. Think in terms of a pack of wild, ravenous dogs. The kind that seek to devour anything or anyone that steps into their path. These people are spiritual predators. They will suck the life out of you, if you allow them.

The second group that Paul refers to are evil workers. They very well may be what you are imagining. These people have morally corrupt character. The mindset may be one of “I can do what I desire and then ask forgiveness later”. This is not a godly mindset. Paul tells the church at Corinth in 1 Corinthians 15:33, “Don’t be fooled by those who say such things, for “bad company corrupts good character.” Paul was warning the church to be careful with whom they spent their time. Ministry is one thing, friendship is quite another.

The third group Paul mentions are those who mutilate the flesh. The sign of the covenant God made with Abraham was the circumcision of the males who belonged to Abraham’s family. This was an important ritual among the Jews. However, this group would come behind those preaching Christ and claim that salvation could only come with Christ plus circumcision. It was all for outward appearance. A way of law keeping that could hinder one’s growth in Christ. (Check out Romans 4:11)

Don’t we face similar groups of people even today? People who want to rip our faith to shreds, make us believe we can live like we want just because we prayed a prayer or was baptized, and even those who say it is Christ plus (fill in the blank) that will give us salvation. I have news for you, it is in Christ alone that we find salvation. Paul goes on to say that we boast in Christ Jesus. What does boasting in Christ even mean?

Hang with me, when my oldest son was just four years old, we had gone to a fall festival and he was dressed as Batman. A friend of ours had told us her nephew was coming dressed as Robin and Drew got so excited. My husband had taken him, standing in line to get cotton candy when Drew wandered off. My hands were full with a newborn and a toddler. Frantically my husband runs to me asking if Drew is with me. As I looked around, it seemed as if every child was dressed as Batman. How on earth was I supposed to find my son? If somehow I could have been above the crowd and been able to see through the masks I may have been able to spot him sooner.

Boasting is kind of like having the right vantage point and base of operation to deal successfully with a matter or in a situation. Christ is our vantage point and base of operation. It is only through him that we are able to see clearly through the masks and crowds around us. We must rely on Him. He is who we worship, who we serve. Make much of Him!

Questions for Reflection:

  • Who surrounds you?
  • Of whom or what do you make much?
  • What evidence of faith is there in your life?

Father, thank You that it is through faith in Christ alone that we are saved. We don’t have to believe the lies that come at us. Please give us eyes to see Your plan and to trust You in all things. Amen.
