“And you Philippians know that in the early days of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving except you alone. For even in Thessalonica you sent gifts for my need several times. Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the profit that is increasing to your account. But I have received everything in full, and I have an abundance. I am fully supplied, having received from Epaphroditus what you provided—a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God. And my God will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Now to our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.
Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brothers who are with me send you greetings. All the saints send you greetings, especially those who belong to Caesar’s household. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.”
Philippians 4:14-23 CSB

Life and ministry can be very lonely. The Philippian church was one of the first to partner with Paul as he poured his life out as a ministry to those with whom he came in contact. He was grateful and desired for this precious church to know how deeply they meant to him. Paul made sure to tell them more than once in his letter just how dearly he held them.

Over a lifetime many people come into and go out of our lives. We move, change schools, graduate, go to college, get married, go to work, change jobs, raise children with whom the cycle begins with yet again. We met teachers, friends, employers, employees, church friends, college friends, people we knew growing up. So many people likely have stories about us from the time we were new born until today. Yet so many of them are not an ongoing part of our lives. They step in for times and seasons. Some will stick around for the long haul. While others you may not even remember years down the road. Be sure to say and show your thankfulness.

Here, too, Paul reminds us that our choice to follow Christ and live our days for Him may not always mean easy times. It does mean that in following Christ, He will provide what we need for life and godliness according to His plan. Remember that as you live, you may face difficult circumstances but you do not face them alone. Just think of those who belonged to Caesar’s household and what they faced because of their faith.

Questions for Reflection

  • To whom do you need to let your thankfulness be known?
  • How can you live out your faith in the midst of adversity?
  • Are you trusting Christ to meet your needs, not just what you think you need?

Thank you, Father, for the church, your people, whom have graciously surrounded me. Help me to live out my thanks to You and to them by my words and actions toward them, loving them as You have loved me. Amen.
